Liposuction

Liposuction is the process of removing unwanted fat from certain parts of the body by vacuuming it out. It is an ideal fat removal operation for non-obese patients with regional adiposity problems. Liposuction is mostly applied to the belly, back, waist, hips, arms, legs, and jowl areas. In men, gynecomastia, i.e. fat in the chest area, can also be removed.

Body fat can cause aesthetic problems, especially during the summer months, which can be psychologically disturbing. These problems can be solved with liposuction after making the necessary consultations.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction surgery is a procedure for removing fat. The operation is planned by identifying the areas where the patient has excess fat. Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia and the duration of the operation may vary depending on the number of areas to be treated. It usually takes 3 to 4 hours.

Liposuction involves inserting 1.5 mm thin cannulas under the skin and suctioning the fat in that area. Different devices can be used for liposuction, such as the classical liposuction and the Vaser liposuction device.

Am I Suitable for Liposuction?

Patients who decide to undergo liposuction must meet certain criteria. The most important of these is that the BMI, that is, the body mass index, should be 30 or below. This is because liposuction cannot achieve the desired results in overweight patients and is also risky for them. We will explain this in detail below.

For liposuction:

Liposuction — Eligibility & Medical Requirements

Eligibility Criteria
BMI should be 30 or below
Obese patients are not suitable for liposuction.
Those with chronic diseases should undergo a detailed health check.
Patients with heart disease, diabetes, bleeding disorders, or high blood pressure should have detailed medical evaluations.
Patients under 18 years of age require the approval of their parents.

Consultation Before Liposuction

Clinic Health Beauty assistants ask liposuction patients to complete the consultation form thoroughly. The consultation form is very important to get to know the patients, learn their expectations, and determine the most suitable operation and technique for them.

The consultation form includes:

Preoperative Evaluation — Documents & Details

Information Required
Height and weight
Chronic diseases
Medications used
Infectious diseases
Birth control medications
Pictures of the patient
Video of the patient
Patient's expectations

The evaluation of the patients who submit the consultation form is examined by the Specialist Aesthetic Surgeon. Liposuction approval is given after all medical examinations.

We encounter many patients who apply for liposuction and also need a tummy tuck. For this reason, we attach importance to the pre-consultation stage.

Things to Consider Before Liposuction

Attention should be paid to maintaining a healthy and balanced diet before undergoing liposuction surgery. You should take care not to gain weight and not assume that “my fat will be removed anyway”. Additionally, you should not exceed the body mass index.

Consult with your doctor and stop taking blood thinners 3-4 weeks prior to the surgery. Liposuction surgery carries a high risk of bleeding, so please provide these details in the preoperative consultation form.

Stop taking birth control medication as it increases the risk of clot formation, which can put your surgery at risk.

Avoid getting sick with flu or colds. Rest during the last week before surgery as being sick can interfere with your surgery.

Avoid smoking as it can adversely affect anesthesia and postoperative recovery. Try to quit smoking 3 weeks before the surgery.

Prepare yourself psychologically for the surgery. Liposuction is one of the most common plastic surgeries, but you may experience pain, especially in the first 2 days. Therefore, it is important to feel psychologically strong.

What is 360-Degree Liposuction?

360-degree liposuction is an operation to remove fat from the patient’s back, belly, and waist area, providing contour to the body.

It is important to consider the body as a whole during liposuction. It can be challenging to achieve smooth body contours by removing fat from only one part of the body. This is why 360-degree liposuction is recommended.

Based on patient complaints, fat can also be removed from the arms and legs with 360-degree liposuction. Jowl liposuction can also be performed.

Recovery Period After Liposuction

The recovery period after liposuction may differ among patients. In general, you will experience pain for the first two days after surgery. You may also feel weakness and dizziness. In rare cases, nausea may occur. When you are brought to your room after the operation, you may experience shivering and chills. This should not worry you or your relatives, as your body temperature will return to normal in about an hour.

Approximately four hours after the liposuction surgery, you will have an easy-to-digest meal. After eating, you will be asked to take your first walk with a special nurse. Walking is very important in the hospital after liposuction, as it helps your blood circulation return to normal and reduces the risk of embolism. You may experience dizziness during the first walk, but you should try again after a little rest.

After liposuction, you may feel fluid coming out of your corset. This is a normal situation. You may also experience pain for the first two nights, but you will be given IV treatment and painkillers for this.

In liposuction surgery, drains will be placed in some areas for the dirty liquid to come out. Your drains will be removed after three to four days with the follow-up of the doctor and nurses.

You should drink plenty of water during your hospital stay and eat your meals regularly. You should also take frequent walks in the corridor.

You will wear your corset for three months. During this period, you can choose a Colombian corset.

You can have lipo massages when you return to your country. Lipo drainage massages are useful in shaping the body and removing edema from the body quickly.

You will be able to see the results of liposuction surgery from the first month. It will take six to seven months to see its final form.

You should eat a balanced and healthy diet during this period and try not to gain weight. You should also walk and do sports.

You must follow the prescription given to you after surgery and take your medication regularly.

Leg Liposuction

Along with 360-degree liposuction, leg liposuction is one of the most desired areas, especially inner leg liposuction.

Inner leg liposuction is particularly popular among women, who prefer to target their ankles, knees, upper legs, and inner thighs.

The liposuction procedure involves making an incision in the knee area, after which a special leg corset is worn to aid in recovery.

In the case of upper and inner leg liposuction, the possibility of sagging skin should be considered. In such cases, the amount of fat removed may be reduced to prevent sagging. For those with looser skin, it is important to be cautious about the amount of fat removed to avoid sagging. Therefore, the experience of a specialist aesthetic doctor in this area is crucial.

Arm Liposuction

Arm liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the arms. The procedure involves inserting a thin cannula through the elbow area to remove the fat. After the operation, an arm corset is worn.

Arm liposuction can be combined with 360-degree liposuction and is typically performed under general anesthesia. It can also be performed in conjunction with an arm lift.

It’s important to note that arm liposuction and arm lift are two separate procedures. Some patients mistakenly believe that liposuction will correct sagging skin in the arms, but this is not always the case. It may not be possible to correct sagging skin without a surgical lift, so a consultation is recommended to determine the best course of action.

Double Chin Liposuction

Double chin liposuction is recommended to remove the thickness caused by fat under the chin. The fat in the double chin is removed using the liposuction method. A special face corset is worn, and the procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

360 can be combined with liposuction. However, double chin liposuction is not suitable for sagging jowls. In such cases, a face and neck lift is recommended.

What are the Risks of Liposuction?

Liposuction, which is a fat removal operation, carries the same risks as other surgical procedures. To minimize these risks, patients must meet certain criteria that make them suitable for liposuction. Additionally, the surgery should be performed in a reputable hospital with an experienced doctor.

The risks associated with liposuction include:

Surgical Risks & Complications

Potential Risks
Edema
Bleeding
Infection
Skin necrosis
Embolism
Nerve injury
Fat clot
Asymmetry problem

Liposuction can be risky because the melted fat during the procedure can potentially block blood vessels, causing a condition called embolism. This can have serious consequences if it occurs in the lungs or brain.

It is crucial to stay mobile, especially after liposuction surgery. Patients should try to walk for at least 4 hours after returning to their room following the surgery to ensure that their blood flow returns to normal.

Liposuction is risky for obese and overweight patients. Therefore, it is recommended that only patients with an appropriate body mass index undergo liposuction.
